The history of meetings between teams from the Soviet Union and those from the National Hockey League goes back to 1976, when CSKA and Krylya Sovetov made the journey to North America and played 8 matches against clubs from the NHL. From that time up until 1991 clubs from the USSR, the NHL and the World Hockey Association contested 22 series of games, playing a total of 116 matches. Victory went to Soviet clubs in 59 of these, while 10 ended in a tie and 47 were won by the North Americans. The ratio of goals was 429:387 in favor of the Soviet teams.
